What Love Does | Discovering Storge: The Beauty of Familial Love in Our Church Community

Crosspointchurchtx   -

As we embark on a new year, many of us are seeking to deepen our relationships and fin
genuine connections. In our recent sermon series, “What Love Does,” we explored the
concept of “storge” love—a Greek term that describes the natural affection found within
families. This type of love is characterized by familiarity and comfort, much like the bonds we
share with our family members. But how can we cultivate this kind of love within our church
community?

Discussion: Understanding Storge Love

Storge love is unique because it thrives on familiarity and acceptance. It’s the kind of love
that sees past quirks and imperfections, embracing others just as they are. In Romans
12:9-21, the Apostle Paul provides a blueprint for living out this love within the body of
Christ. He urges us to love genuinely, serve enthusiastically, and live harmoniously with one
another.

Key Points from Romans 12

Genuine Love: Paul warns against pretending to love others. True love is sincere and without
hypocrisy. It requires us to be authentic and vulnerable, allowing others to see us as we truly
are.

Serving with Enthusiasm: Love is not passive. It calls us to action, to serve others with zeal
and dedication, reflecting the love of Christ in our deeds
Living in Harmony: Storge love seeks peace and unity. It rejoices with those who rejoice and
weeps with those who weep, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Application: Living Out Storge Love

1. Embrace Authenticity
Challenge yourself to be more open and honest in your interactions. Share your true self
with others, and encourage them to do the same. This authenticity builds trust and deepens
relationships.
2. Serve with Purpose
Look for opportunities to serve within your church community. Whether it’s volunteering for
a ministry, helping a family in need, or simply offering a listening ear, your acts of service can
make a significant impact
3. Foster Unity:
Make an effort to connect with those you may not know well in your church. Invite someone
new for coffee, join a small group, or participate in church events. These interactions help
build a sense of family and unity.
4. Practice Empathy
Be present for others in their times of joy and sorrow. Celebrate their successes and support
them in their struggles. This empathy strengthens the bonds of storge love.

Conclusion
Storge love is a beautiful expression of God’s love for us, reflected in our relationships wit
one another. As we strive to live out this love, we create a church community that is
welcoming, supportive, and united in Christ. Let’s commit to embracing this familial love,
allowing it to transform our interactions and deepen our connections.
