Missio Dei: Embracing the Mission: Lessons from Abraham’s Journey
In our recent sermon series, “Missio Dei,” we explored the profound journey of Abraham, a man
called by God to leave everything familiar and step into the unknown. This story, found in
Genesis 12, is not just a historical account but a powerful reminder of the mission God has for
each of us.
The Call to Leave
Abraham was asked to leave his native country, his relatives, and his father’s household. This
was no small request. It meant abandoning the sources of his identity, security, and comfort.
Yet, Abraham obeyed, trusting in God’s promise of a new land and a great nation.
● What are the “comfort zones” in your life that God might be calling you to leave behind?
How can stepping out in faith lead to new opportunities for growth and service?
Faith and Obedience
Abraham’s journey was marked by faith and obedience. Despite not knowing the destination,
he trusted God’s promise. This faith was counted to him as righteousness, setting a precedent
for all believers.
● In what areas of your life is God asking you to trust Him more deeply? How can you
demonstrate obedience even when the path is unclear?
God’s Promises
God promised Abraham that he would be a blessing to all nations. This promise was not just
for Abraham but for all his spiritual descendants. Through faith, we too are part of this
promise, called to be a blessing to others.
● How can you be a blessing in your community, workplace, or family? What practical
steps can you take to share God’s love and truth with those around you?
Setting Up Altars
Everywhere Abraham went, he built altars to worship God and declare His presence. These
altars were physical reminders of God’s faithfulness and Abraham’s commitment.
● What “altars” can you set up in your life to remind you of God’s presence and
promises? How can these reminders help you stay focused on your mission?
A Mission for Today
Just as Abraham was called to a new land, we are called to be on mission with God in our own
contexts. This mission involves sharing our stories of faith and pointing others to Jesus.
● What is your personal story of encountering God, and how can you share it with
others? Who in your life needs to hear about the hope and transformation you’ve
experienced?
Conclusion
Abraham’s journey is a powerful example of faith in action. As we reflect on his story, let’s be
inspired to embrace our own mission with courage and trust. God is calling each of us to step
out, set up camp, and share the good news of His love and grace.
May we, like Abraham, be willing to leave behind the familiar and step into the adventure God
has for us. Let’s go forth, empowered by His promises, to be a blessing to the world.
